Pre-school and School Age Classes

CLSS’s pre-school and school age lessons consist of a range of activities that promote swimming and water safety, including games, water safety education, skill promotion, stroke development, ongoing evaluation and parent education.

School Age Level 1

Our School Age Level 1 (SA-L1) is designed as the introduction to independent swimming. Available for children aged 3 and older, this level focuses on developing the following essential skills: 

  • Safe entry and exit of the pool (unassisted) 
  • Back and front floating 
  • Kicking for a distance of 2.5m in a streamline position 
  • Introduction to basic arm circles for learning freestyle 

School Age Level 2

Our School Age Level 2 (SA-L2) introduces students to their first strokes: Freestyle and Backstroke. Open to children aged 3 and up who have completed SA-L1 or can swim independently for 2.5 meters with an effective kick, this level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Introduction to starts 
  • Recovering objects from the bottom of the pool 
  • Basic Freestyle with unilateral breathing for 5m 
  • Basic Backstroke for 5m 

School Age Level 3

Our School Age Level 3 (SA-L3) builds on Freestyle and Backstroke, emphasising technique improvement and longer distances. Open to children who have completed SA-L2 or can swim 5 meters of basic Freestyle and Backstroke, this level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Refining starts 
  • Building confidence in deep water 
  • Freestyle with bilateral breathing for 10m 
  • Backstroke for 10m 

School Age Level 4

Our School Age Level 4 (SA-L4) advances Freestyle and Backstroke to focus on building stronger, more competition style strokes, while introducing them to Breaststroke. Open to children who have completed SA-L3 or can swim 10 meters of confident Freestyle and Backstroke, this level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Introduction to in water somersaults to later be developed into tumble turns 
  • Learning survival strokes 
  • High elbow Freestyle with bilateral breathing for 15m 
  • Strong continuous Backstroke for 15m with an introduction to a bent arm pull 
  • Introduction to Breaststroke kick 

School Age Level 5

Our School Age Level 5 (SA-L5) focuses on developing Breaststroke while building up the endurance for Freestyle and Backstroke. Open to children who have completed SA-L4 or can swim 15 meters of technically correct Freestyle and Backstroke, this level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Basic tumble and touch turns 
  • Treading water for 1 minute + 
  • Freestyle and Backstroke for 25m 
  • Breaststroke with correct timing for 25m 
  • Introduction to Butterfly kick 

School Age Level 6

Our School Age Level 6 (SA-L6) introduces students to Butterfly while continuing to refine their Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke. Open to children who have completed SA-L5 or can swim 25 meters of Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke confidently and correctly, this level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Correctly utilising tumble and touch turns 
  • Reach, throw and non-contact tow rescues 
  • Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke for 50m 
  • Basic Butterfly for 12.5m

School Age Level 7

Our School Age Level 7 (SA-L7) is designed as the first preparatory level leading up to squad swimming. With a focus on advanced stroke techniques and competitive skills, students will begin to refine their Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly. Open to children who have completed SA-L6 or can swim 50 meters of Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke and 12.5 meters of Butterfly confidently and correctly, this level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Introduction to Backstroke tumble turn and competition style touch turn 
  • Swim all survival strokes for 50m each 
  • Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke for 100m 
  • Butterfly for 25m 
  • Complete a 100m Individual Medley with correct stroke technique

School Age Level 8

Our School Age Level 8 (SA-L8) is the second preparatory level leading up to squad swimming. With a focus on advanced stroke techniques and competitive skills, students will continue to refine their Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly. Open to children who have completed SA-L7 or can swim 100 meters of Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke and 25 meters of Butterfly confidently and correctly, this level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Backstroke tumble turn and competition style touch turn 
  • Treading water for 6 minutes + 
  • Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke for 150m 
  • Butterfly for 50m 
  • Complete a 200m Individual Medley with correct stroke technique

School Age - Junior

Our Junior Squad (JNR) classes run for 60 minutes and is open to children who have completed SA-L8. Alternatively, students who can swim 150 meters of Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke and 50 meters of Butterfly confidently and correctly.  This level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly for 200m 
  • Endurance swim of Freestyle for 800m 
  • Competitive stroke correction 
  • Introduction to squad style swim sets

School Age - Senior

Our Senior Squad (SNR) classes run for 60 minutes and is open to children who have completed JNR. Alternatively, students who can swim 200 meters of Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly with competitive technique as well as complete an 800 meter distance Freestyle swim and a 200 meter Individual Medley.  This level focuses on developing the following key skills: 

  • Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly for 400m 
  • Endurance swim of Freestyle for 1000m + 
  • Competitive stroke correction
